Project I.D. Web Report
In this segment, we will provide a summarised personal journals from our group members about their first hand experience with the Intellectually Disabled
We paid visits to NGOs such as Thye Hwa Kwan and SPD for this report.
Our thoughts :
After our first visit to the Moral Welfare Home, frankly speaking, it was indeed and eye-opener for us. To be honest, I have never come into close contact with so many intellectually disabled people before. When I first saw them, I knew I had to communicate with them so as to understand their plight. After much interaction, I realized that they are actually very pitiful as many of them are
unaware of their situation. In addition, I was made aware that many of them were abandoned by their families as they were seen as a financial burden.
Later on, I went around the centre to take a look at the facilities and felt that they were and well-equipped. We also helped in serving dinner to the residents are cleaning up the place. Through that, I learned that different residents there need different accommodations. By personally helping them out, I realized that one does not need to only donate his or her money to help the less fortunate but can also donate one’s time to help these people. Hence, I feel that there is a need for me to try my best through this project to help these people lead a better life.

Facilities:
Thye Hwa Kwan:
The entire facility was huge
The environment was good and floors were clean. (They were cleaned everyday)
We asked a resident there whether he was happy living there and he replied
"I have everything I need here: shelter, food and friends. Why should I not be happy?"
The staff there were also really friendly and many of the residents were good friends with the staff.
Society for the Physically Disabled
The facility was also very clean, and the furniture were new.
The staff took great care of the residents and played with them games as well. They were also able to make jokes with one another.
They were also engaged in fun acitivities that the staff made for them.
